Xiaohongshu Grid Looks Blurry? Fix Soft Tiles Before You Post
Why RedNote nine-grid notes look sharp on desktop but soft in the app — size table, JPG vs PNG, and the five checks I run before upload.
I keep getting the same message: "The split looks fine on my laptop. I upload to Xiaohongshu (RedNote), open the draft on my phone, and suddenly every tile looks dusty." Most of the time the app is not broken. You stacked a soft source, a tight tile size, and another compression pass — and the grid only shows it after swipe preview.

Name the kind of blur you are seeing
Three different problems get called "糊" in Chinese group chats. Fix the wrong one and you waste an evening.
- Whole set looks gray / soft — classic platform recompression on undersized or already-soft tiles.
- Seams look fuzzy or show a hairline — width not divisible by 3, or the cutter rounded pixels differently on each edge.
- Only the text panels look crunchy — small Chinese type exported as aggressive JPG. Photos can stay JPG; price tags and step cards usually want PNG.
Size table I actually use before splitting
Platform display rules change. Treat this as a working baseline, then trust the in-app preview more than any blog table — including this one.

Cover logic and mosaic logic are not the same. A vertical 3:4 cover can win feed space; a nine-tile mosaic still needs each cell to hold detail after the cut. If the long edge of a tile sits well under 1080 for weeks of posts, soft uploads are almost guaranteed.
JPG vs PNG for Xiaohongshu multi-image notes

- Photographs and lifestyle frames → high-quality JPG.
- Small type, price, checklist slides → PNG.
- Huge files are not a free pass. Oversized PNGs can still get punished on upload. Aim for sharp detail in a sane file size, not "maximum megabytes."
Five-step checklist before you hit publish
- Kill screenshot-of-screenshot masters. Re-export from the design file or the camera original.
- Upscale before the cut if the master is small — the in-browser upscaler in 9grid is enough for many casual shots; it will not invent missing detail on a muddy phone screenshot.
- Make width divisible by 3 before a 3-column split (1080 / 2160 / 3240…). Odd widths create 1px seam fights.
- Pick format per panel, not one format for the whole ZIP out of habit.
- Preview in the Xiaohongshu app on cellular data when you can. Wi-Fi desktop exports lie politely.
Practical path: open 9grid, or jump straight to split image in 9, export numbered tiles locally, then upload from the phone gallery in reading order.
Do not borrow Instagram posting habits
Instagram profile mosaics often need reverse posting order. Xiaohongshu multi-image notes usually want reading order — the order you want someone to swipe. Wrong order will not always "blur" the set, but it makes a clean split feel broken, and people blame the cutter.

Why does my Xiaohongshu grid look clear on desktop but blurry on my phone?
The app recompresses uploads on mobile networks. If each tile is already soft or under about 1080px on the long edge, the second pass makes muddiness obvious. Preview the note in the Xiaohongshu app before publishing.
Do I always need a 3240×3240 source for a 3×3?
Not always, but it is the safest starting point when you want square tiles near 1080×1080 after the split. Smaller masters work for casual posts; expect softer cells after platform compression.
Can I split iPhone HEIC files directly?
Yes in 9grid — HEIC opens in the browser. Still export tiles as high-quality JPG for photos or PNG for small text, then upload those exports from your gallery.
Will an online splitter compress my image again before Xiaohongshu does?
Server tools might. Prefer a local browser tool that never uploads the file, and pick the export format yourself. Xiaohongshu will still compress on upload; your job is not to hand it a soft source.
