WeChat Moments & Xiaohongshu 9-Grid Guide: Layouts That Still Work in 2026

Instagram gets most of the English-language grid tutorials, but a huge share of day-to-day nine-square publishing still happens on WeChat Moments and Xiaohongshu (RedNote). The visual goal looks similar — one photo becomes a tidy mosaic — yet the product rules, compression habits, and caption expectations are different enough that a copy-pasted Instagram workflow often looks cheap.

This guide is the workflow I recommend when someone asks 9grid for a Moments album or a Xiaohongshu multi-image note. It assumes you will split locally in the browser with 9grid, then upload from your phone gallery.

WeChat Moments: the classic nine-square album

Moments still presents up to nine images in a square album. Friends open the post and scan the mosaic as a single unit, so seam quality matters more than hashtags. Start from a sharp source near 3240×3240 if you want each cell to stay crisp after WeChat recompresses the upload.

Unlike Instagram's profile grid, Moments order is closer to the order you pick images in the album picker. Sort numbered tiles in reading order (1→9) before you tap send. Reverse order is usually the wrong instinct here — that rule belongs to Instagram profile mosaics.

• Prefer one hero scene split into nine, not nine unrelated snaps dumped into a square.
• Keep faces and text away from the four interior seams.
• Write one caption for the whole album; Moments readers rarely swipe panel-by-panel like a Xiaohongshu note.

Xiaohongshu: multi-image notes that earn saves

Xiaohongshu rewards notes that feel intentional. A 3×3 or 2×3 split of one campaign graphic can work, but each slide should still make sense when someone pauses mid-swipe. That means drafting a short line for panels that show a detail, a price cue, or a step — not repeating the same emoji block nine times.

Practical sizes: export tiles around 1080×1080 or slightly taller if your note style is portrait-first. If the design includes small Chinese text, export PNG for those panels; photographs can stay high-quality JPG.

2. Split with split image in 9 or a 2×3 layout for shorter notes.
3. Preview seams on your phone before writing the note body.
4. Upload in the order you want readers to swipe — usually reading order.
5. Put the strongest CTA on the last slide, where decision friction is lowest.

Shared quality rules for both apps

Both apps compress aggressively on mobile networks. Soft sources become obvious after the split because each tile is smaller than the original. If the master file is a screenshot of a screenshot, stop and re-export from the design tool or camera roll original. If the set already looks fine on desktop but turns muddy in the Xiaohongshu draft preview, use the blurry Xiaohongshu grid checklist.
